UAE sick leave rules
| Sick days in a year of service | Pay |
|---|---|
| Days 1 to 15 | Full pay |
| Days 16 to 45 | Half pay |
| Days 46 to 90 | Unpaid |
These rules come from Article 31 of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021. They apply after probation, and the days can be taken together or separately during the year.
Worked example
An employee on AED 8,000 total salary has used 10 sick days this year and is now off for 20 more. The first 5 days are at full pay (up to day 15) and the next 15 at half pay. Daily pay is AED 266.67, so sick pay is 5 × 266.67 + 15 × 133.33 = AED 3,333.33.
What sick leave does not cover
Sick leave is not paid when the illness comes from the employee's own misconduct, such as alcohol or drug use, or from breaking safety rules. Work injuries and occupational illness follow separate rules.
